Pics from Minocqua over the 4th

More pics from Month 1

My Grandma Danner came through GB on her way to her sister-in-laws funeral in the U.P. a week after Kipton was born with my Uncle Tom, Great-Aunt Jean and dad's cousin Kathy.

Collin's 3rd birthday at the Children's Museum

Kipton attended his first birthday party when he was only 8 days old! What made it even more special was that his Gigi and Opa came! Happy 3rd birthday Collin!

Month 1 pics and lots of help

We were very blessed to have TONS of help the first month of Kipton's life. My mom stayed with us from the night before going to the hospital through the following Saturday. She got up with me every time during the night that Kipton got up and helped me get him ready to be fed. Changing his diaper and helping him to wake up a bit so he wouldn't fall asleep while eating. She drove us to places we needed to go, since I was not allowed to drive. She spent countless amounts of time with Macayla, taking her on walks, reading her stories, etc. Jason took off of work the Friday Kipton was born and the Monday we came home. With my mom here he didn't need to take off any more days. The Monday after my mom left, my friend Heather spent the day with us. She drove us to the YMCA and attended Macyala's gym class with her.

That evening Tricia and Jeremy arrived from MN. They stayed until Friday. They also were a great deal of help, especially with Macayla. Tricia wasn't sure how much help she would be since she was newly pregnant herself and had been VERY, VERY sick. Right before she came over to GB she got some anti-nausea meds from her doctor which helped take the edge off. Jeremy and Macayla had tons of bonding time. They read many, many books and watched movies on the new big TV in the newly completed basement with the newly installed surround sound. (Jason is very proud of his basement and has every right to be with all the hours and sweat put into in the past 6 months). Tricia and Jeremy were extremely helpful and we were sad to see them leave.

And then we were by ourselves...well for a few days at least. That next Monday Heather once again spent the day with us and attended gym class with Macayla. Tuesday Jason left for out of town through Friday :(. I packed up the kids and went to Freedom for the day to be with Jason's parents. After a fun-filled day with Poppy, Bushia, Angie and Collin, Macayla stayed for a sleepover and I took Kipton back home. Wednesday Jason's parents met me on HWY 29 with Macayla and we left for Minocqua. I was lucky enough that Heather was leaving for Minocqua at the same time so when I needed to stop in Wausua to go to the bathroom she was able to help out with the kids.

We then spent 11 days in Minocqua over the 4th of July. Of the 11 days, Jason was able to be there all but 4 of the days. Melissa was there during both of the weekends. It was a nice transition to being alone during the day when Jason was in GB and my parents were at work. I was able to meet them for lunch most of the days and my mom was home by 4:30 each day from work. The week and a half was filled with water ski shows, movies, walks, trips to the park, lots of ice cream and lots of extra help.

As you can tell Jason, Macayla, Kipton and I were very fortunate!

Hospital stay...

We once again took full advantage of staying in the hospital and having all the extra help. We got as much sleep as we could while still getting plenty of bonding time with Kipton. We wanted Macayla to be the first to meet Kipton so we called and told my mom to bring her around 11:00. They stayed for a very short time but the video we got is priceless.

After about 2 days I started to get a headache. Initially we thought it may be allergy/sinus related but I knew to keep an eye on it from the last time. The day before I left the hospital I knew it was the starting of a spinal headache. I was fine lying down but as soon as I sat up the pain was intense. The nurse agreed and got a blood patch arranged for me. I didn't want to wait until it was unbearable like the last time. I was given a blood patch (NOT a pleasant experience) and the headache went away.

Overall the time in the hospital went very quickly.

The day of....

We arrived at the hospital promptly at 5:00am. They asked if I needed a wheelchair, but since I wasn't in labor (or so I thought) I kind of laughed and said "no I'm fine, I can walk." When we got up to the birthing floor they were waiting for us. We were told it was so busy that they had to save a room for us and it was the last available. The floor was full!

I was hooked up to the monitor so they could keep track of baby's heartbeat and my contractions. And to our surprise I was actually having contractions 5 minutes apart. The doctor chose the right day for us to have c-section b/c according to the monitor I was in labor! Since I had such severe braxton hicks throughout the past couple of weeks I wasn't paying much attention to my contracting stomach.

Within in an hour the nurse and anathesiaologist came to check on me. I mentioned that with Macayla the first spinal did not work and that I ended up needing a second. Additionally I told them I had gotten a spinal headache and ultimately at blood patch. When I told them this they seemed very surprised and stated that they were sorry I had such a difficulty time last time and it shouldn't happen this time.

Well, they jinxed themselves. I was wheeled to the operating room and put on the VERY NARROW operating table, and got my arms strapped down (precautionary I was told...). I was given the first spinal (yes I said first). After about 2 minutes they "checked" me with an ice pack to see if it had worked. Of course it hadn't. Every couple of minutes he would check me again....each time lowering the end of the table my head was on to "help" the medicine to work. It was working "slowly, but working" according to the anathesisalogist. My doctor asked if they should prep and he was told yes. My doctor then "checked me" with some pinchy type thing and I screamed. He "tested" three different spots. Clearly the first spinal was not working. They then set me up to give me a second spinal. At this point I was crying really hard...partially from the pain but mostly from the emotions of everything. When sitting up I was facing the swinging doors. Every time someone came in or went out I saw Jason waiting in a chair outside the operating room. When we made I contact the tears came harder. I can't imagine what he was thinking and feeling. I was being told that usually a spinal works with in 60 seconds...and told if this one doesn't work they'll have to put me completely under.

The good news is that the second spinal worked great. Jason was then able to come in and the surgery began. It did not take very long at all before Kipton James Starke entered the world. He cried almost immediately and continued while being cleaned up. It is the loneliest feeling laying on the operating table hearing your new baby cry and not even being able to seem him...especially when Jason left my side to go meet his new son.

I was in the recovery room a lot shorter time than with Macayla. I wasn't shaky at all. I was very anxious to get back to the room to be reunited with Jason and with Kipton. After about an hour I was wheeled back. Shortly following getting to the room Jason came in and then in came Kipton. The morning seemed like a whirlwind!

The Night before the hospital

The night before we went in to have Kipton, my mom came so she could be with Macayla. That night Jason was running around the house doing his own "nesting". He was working on staining stuff for the basement. I had originally planned on going to bed at 8:00 since the alarm was set for 3:45am, however I was waiting for Jason to finish whatever it was he was working on. Finally at around 9:15 Jason came in from the garage and I thought good now I can go to bed. To much my surprise he came in and said, "do you want to go to Home Depot with me?" I said, "What?!? I planned on being in bed an hour ago." He stated "why so early?". I then said because the alarm is set for 3:45am. With a shocked look on his face he said, "What?!?! Why so early?" I replied, "B/c we have to be at the hospital by 5:00am". He was so surprised because for some reason he thought we didn't have to be there until 10:00am. None the less, he still went to Home Depot for something he "had to get" at that exact moment in time...

We ended up not going to bed until 11:00. I am pretty sure my mom went to bed before we did and she didn't have to be up early. I woke up at 12:30 to go to the bathroom, fell back to sleep and was up again at 2:30. At this point I did not fully go back to sleep again and just lay in bed with my eyes open waiting for my alarm to go off at 3:45.
